Greatindonesia.co.id, Jakarta – Indonesian men’s pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo retained their title of the prestigious All England badminton tournament this year after outclassing Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark.
The Indonesian men’s pair beat the Danish duo in two straight sets 21-8, 21-77, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) revealed in its official website on Monday (19/3/2018).
In the first set, the Indonesian pair led the score in 15-11, but Boe/Morgensen managed to catch up in 15-15.
During the final serve, the Danish men’s pair failed to add the score, and as a result, Markus and Kevin reclaimed the first set of the match.
In the second game, Boe and Mogensen fought back, and sought to outclass Markus and Kevin in 17-17. However, the Indonesian men’s pair successfully led back and won the second match.
“All England is the world’s most prestigious and old badminton tournament, so this victory is special for us. We are pleased to play here, and get many supports,” Kevin said after the match.
After retaining the men’s pair All England title for two times in a row, Marcus and Kevin have followed their senior Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky who grabbed the similar wins in 1995 and 1996.
Another pair who retained the All England titles for two times in a row was Kim Mon-soo and Park Joo-bong of South Korea in 1985 and 1986. (ric)
VIOLENCE AT GBK MAY AFFECT INDONESIA’S BID FOR U-20 WORLD CUP
Greatindonesia.co.id, Jakarta – All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) admitted violence during the 2022 World Cup’s qualifier between Indonesia and Malaysia at Bung Karno Sports Stadium (GBK) in Jakarta on Thursday (5/9/2019) may affect Indonesia’s bid to host U-20 World Cup 2021.
“The incident that we regret will undoubtedly have a more or less impact on our bid. Hopefully, the impact is not too large,” Chief of PSSI Media Relations and Digital Promotion Gatot Widakdo said in Jakarta on Sunday (8/9/2019).
To lessen the impact of the incident on Indonesia’s bid to host the U-20 World Cup 2021, PSSI will explain the chronology of the incident to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), he said.
He said PSSI will accept what the world’s soccer governing body will decide following the incident, including sanctions.
“We are waiting for what FIFA will decide. Once again, I hope the impact is not big,” he said
The incident happened when Indonesia played against Malaysia in the qualifying round of Group G of World Cup 2022 for Asian zone.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has reported the incident to FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
A few Indonesian supporters threw bottles and smoke bombs during the second round of the first home-away match between Indonesia and Malaysia of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualification. Following the incident, the game was stopped for 10 minutes.
Indonesia officially filed its bidding document to FIFA to host the U-20 World Cup 2021.
FIFA noted on its official website on Thursday (10/9/2019) that the All Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) officially submitted Indonesia’s bid to hold the event.
To host the event, Indonesia will go neck to neck with Brazil and Peru that had also submitted formal bids.
FIFA will conduct its review and assessment of the bids prior to taking a final decision on the host of the event at its meeting on October 23-24, 2019, in Shanghai, China. (msh)

TONTOWI/WINNY ADVANCE TO QUARTER-FINALS OF MALAYSIA OPEN 2019
Greatindonesia.co.id, Jakarta – Indonesian mixed doubles pair Tontowi Ahmad/Winny Oktavina Kandow beat Hafiz Faisal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja with a score of 19-21, 21-18 and 21-19 to advance into the 2019 Malaysia Open quarter-finals. For Tontowi/Winny, the victory over Hafiz/Gloria at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday (4/4/2019), was the first one after two encounters in previous matches. The second meeting took place during the 2019 India Open tournament.
“We have studied their playing patterns. At the 2019 Indian Open yesterday, they beat us. We watched the match video again to look for weaknesses,” Tontowi said in an official statement reported by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).
According to Tontowi, who is better known as Owi, the main reason why they won this level 750 match was because they were calm. Although they lagged behind Hafiz/Gloria, he said he remained calm all through the match, right to the end.
“The key to any victory is being calm on the field, and not playing in a hurry. Even though we were behind, we remained calm and continued to collect points one by one, “Owi added.
In the quarter-finals, Tontowi/Winny will face Malaysian partners Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing. The two pairs have never played against each other before.
“Before the quarter-finals, we must get enough rest and maintain a diet. Later, we will study our opponents’ game. The important thing is to play a focused and calm game. Hopefully, I can win,” said Owi.
The 2019 Malaysia Open tournament is taking place from 2 to 7 April 2019. The total prize money for the super 750 level badminton tournament is 700,000 US dollars (US). (eli)
